Let's Go Back to the Bible

Don’t Stop Short!

In 2 Kings 10, we read the story of King Jehu, an epic tale, as he wipes Israel clean of lingering evils. In 2 Kings 10:1-14, Jehu hunts down the remaining family of Ahab, the previous king, who had corrupted the nation, making sure that the bloodline ends. However, Jehu does not stop at Ahab’s family.  For the rest of the chapter, we see Jehu enact a cunning plan to trap and kill every worshipper of Baal that remained in Israel. He called an assembly together to worship Baal, bringing everyone into the house of Baal, and then had guards standing outside. When the time was right, Jehu sent men inside, in order to kill every worshiper, and anyone who might escape would be killed by the guards.

What an incredible story! Jehu purged Israel of all Baal worship, so he must have been a devout follower of God, right? Let us take note of 2 Kings 10:29. Jehu “did not depart” from the sins concerning idols. It emphasizes that thought in verse 31, which says, “Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the Lord.” Even though the Lord blessed Jehu for what he had done (10:30), Jehu continued to do evil.

What we need to learn from Jehu, brothers and sisters, is that we can do great things and still fall short of doing what is right in the end. It is extremely easy to fall off the right path. Let us always do what is right and finish our Christian race (1 Cor. 9:24; 2 Tim. 4:7-8).
