The apostle John enjoyed a special relationship with Jesus. Not only was he one of the twelve apostles, John was inspired to refer to himself as “the disciple whom Jesus loved” (John 21:7, 20). Then, in the short epistle of First John, the apostle emphasized a Christian’s special relationship with the Lord–“truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ…we have fellowship with Him” (1 John 1:3, 6, 7). Fellowship! Fellowship with Jesus! Can you imagine having been John in the upper room with Jesus (in John 13)? There were twelve men sitting around a table with Jesus, but only John is described as “leaning on Jesus” (John 13:23, 25). Oh, what a closeness he enjoyed!
Elisha Hoffman may have had this scene in mind when he penned the following words (back in 1887). Guess what! As a Christian, here is what you enjoy! “What a fellowship, what a joy divine, Leaning on the everlasting arms! What a blessedness, what a peace is mine, Leaning on the everlasting arms! Leaning on Jesus, leaning on Jesus!”
