There is a difference between using the Bible to “prove” a point yourself and using the Bible to be a-“prove”-d (approved) by God. It is possible to take Bible verses and “prove” whatever a person might want to “prove.” One person takes Bible verses to “prove” baptism is essential for salvation; another person takes Bible verses to “prove” baptism is not essential for salvation. (Both concepts, diametrically opposed to each other, cannot both be true!) One person takes Bible verses to “prove” mechanical instruments in worship are acceptable; another person takes Bible verses to “prove” they are not acceptable to God. (Both cannot be true!) One person takes Bible verses to “prove” that drinking alcohol “in moderation” is permissible; another person takes Bible verses to “prove” that it is not permissible to God. (Both cannot be true!)
The Bible teaches what the Bible teaches! (Not what we want it to teach!) Our responsibility is to study the entirety of Scripture (Psa. 119:160) and then handle “aright the word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:15), not looking for what we want it to teach but yielding to what it actually teaches!
