Let's Go Back to the Bible

Have you launched out and let down?

As a fisherman, Peter knew a lot about fishing, but he also knew a lot about catching. When he had “toiled all night and caught nothing,” there can be little doubt that he had done all that he knew how to successfully do to catch fish. He’d been fishing that night, but not catching. Jesus sat in his boat and told him, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch” (Luke 5:4-5). Even better than Peter, Jesus knew about fishing…and catching. “And when they had done this (i.e., exactly what Jesus said to do), they caught a great number of fish” (5:6). Four verses later, Jesus told Peter, “From now on you will catch men” (5:10).

Jesus knew how to catch fish, and He knew how to catch men! To catch fish, He commanded, “Launch out and let down your nets.” To catch men, He commanded, “Go (launch out) and preach the gospel (let down your nets).” When we do this (i.e., exactly what Jesus said to do), we will catch a great number of men. If you wonder why we’re having a “catching” problem, it can only be tied to our “fishing” problem. If we fish His way, we’ll catch His way!
