For a long time in the church, we have emphasized the unique nature of “agape love.” One word (among several) that the Greeks used for love was the word “agape,” which represented the ultimate form of love — an unconditional, unselfish, sacrificial love which sets out to meet the needs of the one to whom it is extended. It is the love that God has for us (John 3:16), the love that Jesus has for us (Eph. 5:2), the love we are to have for God (Matt. 22:37), the love we are to have for our brethren (John 13:34) and the love we are to have for our enemies (Matt. 5:44).
In addition, Scripture teaches that this is the love we are to have for the truth of God (cf. 2 Thess. 2:10)! It’s one thing to think of having agape love for an “animate recipient”; it’s another thing to think of having agape love for an “inanimate recipient” like truth. We are to have unconditional love for truth (no conditions affect it). We are to have unselfish love for truth (no personal ambitions affect it). We are to have sacrificial love for truth (willing to give up anything for its message and purpose). We are to set out to meet the needs of truth (putting them above our own needs and wants). Are you in agape love with God’s truth?
