As Jesus was nearing the end of His life, He told His apostles that when He left, “another Comforter” would be sent by the Father—i.e., the Holy Spirit (John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7). What an interesting word to use—“Comforter” (KJV). The Greek word literally means one who “calls alongside.” What would the apostles need? Comfort! Where would they get it? From “the God of all comfort” (2 Cor. 1:3), when He came and told them “the things” they needed to hear.
When we pick up our Bibles today, guess what we have? We have “the comfort of the Scriptures” (Rom. 15:4), which comes from “the God of comfort” (15:5). With so many things happening in our lives, what do we need? Comfort! Where do we get it? From the Scriptures that were given by “the Comforter”!
How much time do you spend with the words of comfort from the God of comfort? How much better would our lives be, how much closer would we be to God, how much better of a comforter would we be to others, if we were comforted by His inspired comfort?
