Let's Go Back to the Bible

Watch all around you

One of the greatest pieces of advice that I was given when learning to drive was from my sister. She told me to always keep an eye on my rearview mirror, so that I knew where those cars were and how they were driving behind me. Today I spend almost as much time looking in the mirror as I do out the windshield.

We are given this same instruction in the New Testament for effectively living the Christian life. Scripture tells us, “See then that you walk circumspectly” (Eph. 5:15)—keep our eyes open and be careful how we walk. Jesus said, “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation” (Matt. 26:41). The word “watch” means to “be on the alert, keep awake.” Peter issues the same warning, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Pet. 5:8).

When you are driving, watch all around you on every side at all times for signs of danger. Even more, do that as you roll through life as a Christian! “Let us watch and be sober” (1 Thess. 5:6)!
