Let's Go Back to the Bible

Love yourself

What do you think about yourself? Scripture tells us very plainly that a Christian is “not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think” (Rom. 12:3). We must be “humble” (1 Pet. 5:5-6). We must “esteem others better than” ourselves (Phil. 2:3). But, does that mean we are to consider ourselves to be dirt? Does that mean we have no value or importance?

At least eight times in the Bible we read this command, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matt. 22:39). The second greatest commandment has this qualifier–“love your neighbor AS YOURSELF.” Am I supposed to hate myself? No. Think that I’m dirt? No.

I am to see myself as made in the image of God, as everyone is (Gen. 1:26), and the object of God’s love, as everyone is (John 3:16). I am to prioritize the salvation of my soul (Acts 2:40; Phil. 2:12), as I look out for the salvation of others (Mark 16:15). I am to be mindful of my “own interests,” as I strive to be mindful of “the interests of others” (Phil. 2:4). I am important to God!
