Let's Go Back to the Bible

Where’d all your stuff come from? D’ya forget?

God warned His people in the Old Testament, “Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God” (Deut. 8:11).  Honestly, how could they possibly forget God?  The Lord gave the following signs: “when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them; and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied…” (8:12-13).  Whoa!  When everything was going so well, God said that was when they would forget Him.  They would say in their hearts, “My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth” (8:17).

Things certainly have not changed, have they?  When things are going well with us, that is when we are most prone to forget God and to assume that “my power and the might of my hand has gained me all these things.”  Moses told the people to “remember the Lord” and to remember that “it is He who gives you power to get wealth” (8:18).  We have nothing, not even the power to obtain wealth, without God!  May we never forget that or forget Him!
