The greatest blessing any person can ever experience on this earth is to be forgiven of their sins. When the Ethiopian eunuch was baptized in Acts 8, the Bible says that “he went on his way rejoicing” (8:39). Why? Because he had been forgiven! It was the “good news”!
So, what would be the greatest tragedy any person could ever experience on this earth? You might think that never being forgiven would be the worst thing ever, but Peter said there is something worse–i.e., to have been forgiven and then to turn from the way of righteousness.
The greatest tragedy is to be a forgiven child of God and then have God tell you that He will no longer forgive you. Someone might ask, “Would God really say that?” He not only would, He has! “If you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (Matt. 6:14-15). Forgiven once, but forgiven no longer! And, why? Because you do not possess a forgiving heart and freely forgive others! That’s sobering…at least for me!
