Let's Go Back to the Bible

What’s your purpose?

What was Jesus’ purpose in coming? How would you answer that question? Our immediate thought likely goes to Luke 19:10–“to seek and to save the lost.” Can you think of a verse that has the word “purpose”? Approaching His final hours, Jesus exclaimed, “For this purpose I came to this hour…” (John 12:27). Peter preached that He was “delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God” (Acts 2:23). His purpose was to be the sacrificial Lamb!

Still, Jesus makes an interesting statement in Luke 4:43 — “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.” When He came to this earth, Jesus was not only here to die. He was here to live! And, His purpose in living was to preach the kingdom! (Of course, His purpose in dying was to purchase the kingdom–cf. Acts 20:28).

What is your purpose in living? Does your purpose match (or look anything like) Jesus’ purpose? How often do you preach the kingdom of God to others?
