Our nation is certainly not what it used to be. When the phrase “under God” was added to our Pledge of Allegiance, President Eisenhower commented about those two words, “They will help us to keep constantly in our minds and hearts the spiritual and moral principles which alone give dignity to man.” Thirty years later, President Reagan advised, “If we ever forget that we’re one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under.” Look where we are now.
The spiritual and moral decline in our nation is apparent. Many reasons could be suggested as to the cause, but these two Presidents foretold the cause: choosing to not be “under God.”
Forget the national application of this and make a personal application. Are you truly, daily, willingly, pleasantly “under God” in your personal life? Does your life reflect the dignity of living “under God”? While we need to be concerned about our nation, we need more to reflect on our own submission to our God! Have you pledged to live “under God” each day (Jas. 4:7-10)?
