Have you ever heard a recording of your voice (maybe on a voicemail or a video) and thought, “That’s not how I sound…is it? Is that really how I sound to other people?” In our minds (and in our ears), we “hear ourselves” one way, but hearing a recording might sound more “pitchy” or nasal or strained or “throaty.” It can make you wonder how you actually sound.
Take that and apply it to more than just the “sound” of your voice but to the entirety of your communication habits. When others hear you, do you “come across” like you have an attitude or that you’re arrogant or that you don’t care? Or, do you “come across” like you’re humble, compassionate, interested, sincere and sympathetic? You may think that you “come across” one way, but in actuality, you may be coming across completely different.
Try to listen to your words and your tone through the ears of others. What if someone else spoke to you in the way you speak to others? How would that “come across” to you?
