Cruising along at 45 miles per hour one busy Saturday morning, the driver of a white sedan suddenly slammed on his brakes. The car behind him smashed into his rear bumper, causing a chain reaction accident of four vehicles. The day was ruined for a lot of people.
When the responding officer questioned the driver about the sudden braking, here was the response: “I was driving along just fine, and then I passed a sign that read, ’20 M.P.H.,’ so I slammed on the brakes to get down to 20 in a hurry.” The officer calmly replied, “Sir, that is for the School Zone and is only in effect during the posted days and hours. Today is Saturday.”
Context is everything! While there was a sign that read, “20 M.P.H.,” in the context of that Saturday morning, it did not apply to those drivers. Diligent Bible students will pay attention to the context of the passage that they are studying. To remove a passage from its context (immediate context and Biblical context) can ruin an eternity for a lot of people!
