Can you imagine getting to see Moses? That would be pretty special! The 80-year-old man who led God’s people out of Egypt, through the Red Sea, to Mount Sinai, through the wilderness, to the Promised Land, and wrote the first five books of the Bible! Yes, seeing him would be a treat! Can you imagine getting to see Elijah? The man of trusting prayer, who cared for the widow of Zarephath, defeated the prophets of Baal, confronted Ahab and Jezebel, and rode to heaven in a chariot of fire! Yes, seeing him would be a treat!
Peter, James and John received a double portion when they got to see both Moses and Elijah together (Mark 9:2-5). But there was something infinitely better than that, and the God of heaven wanted them to know how much better! When Peter, James and John “looked around” at the conclusion of the transfiguration event, “they saw no one anymore, but only Jesus with themselves” (Mark 9:8). Think about that statement. Seeing “only Jesus,” being with “only Jesus,” following “only Jesus” is all that matters! ALL that matters!
