We are commanded in Scripture to “encourage one another” (1 Thess. 5:11). Usually, I suppose, when we think of encouraging each other, we probably contemplate the right words that need to be said at the right time. However, sometimes encouragement comes without a word being spoken.
Non-verbal encouragement (at least for me) can include: a little smile, eye contact, a genuine hug, a firm handshake, a thumbs-up, presence in Bible class, interest while in Bible class, presence in worship, participation while in worship, attentive during Bible lessons, seeing brethren warmly greet others, seeing brethren enjoying conversations and interacting, etc.
As you think about the kind of non-verbal encouragement that you like to receive and that lifts you up, concentrate on how you can, in turn, take active steps to be an encourager to others, without even saying a word.
