The claim is often made that as long as you have Jesus then doctrine is not all that important. But the Word of God says, “Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God” (2 John 9). Sounds like doctrine is important! “Charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine” (1 Tim. 1:3). Sounds like a specific doctrine is important! “In vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men” (Matt. 15:9). Sounds like only His doctrine will do! “Note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned” (Rom. 16:17)! Sounds like the one doctrine is critical!
The Lord forewarned that “the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine” (2 Tim. 4:3). When individuals claim that you can follow Jesus without concern for sound doctrine, then they are being “carried about with various and strange doctrines” (Heb. 13:9), and are “advocat[ing] a different doctrine” (1 Tim. 6:3). May God help us to faithfully “abide in the doctrine of Christ,” in order that we might truly have Jesus (2 John 9)!
