Let's Go Back to the Bible

An unsuspected trouble-maker in your home

All sorts of things today bring trouble into our homes. What would you put on a list of things that “trouble” our homes today? Immorality, gambling, pornography, certain family members, lack of discipline, etc.? God says, “He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house” (Prov. 15:27).

We may list all sorts of things that trouble our homes today, but how often do we consider the effect of being “greedy for gain”? Proverbs 23:4 says, “Do not overwork to be rich.” Proverbs 28:20 states, “He who hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.”

Is it wrong to be rich? No! Is it wrong to work to gain money? No! But, how many marriages have been troubled by “greed for gain”? How many children’s lives have been troubled by “greed for gain”? Too much money and too little money can trouble our homes (Prov. 30:8)! Let us keep our primary focus and our greatest desires not upon financial gain but upon spiritual gain–growing in our faith, knowledge and the eternal graces of God (2 Pet. 1:5-8; 3:18)!
