Let's Go Back to the Bible

“Let another praise you, and not your own mouth!”

Jesus encountered a Gentile in the city of Capernaum for whom He had great praise, “I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel” (Luke 7:9). What was it about this man that brought such commendation from the Lord? The centurion had a servant, “who was dear to him” and “was sick and ready to die. So when he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him pleading with Him to come and heal his servant”  (7:2-3). Now, notice how these elders pleaded with Jesus. “They begged Him earnestly, saying that the one for whom He should do this was deserving” (7:4). They praised the centurion as one worthy of the Lord’s grace.

The centurion then sent friends to Jesus with this message about himself: “I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof…I did not even think myself worthy to come to You” (7:6-7). The elders lauded the centurion as one worthy and deserving; however, the centurion himself humbly confessed he was not worthy. What a great illustration of Proverbs 27:2!

“Let another praise you, and not your own mouth!” A lesson for all to learn and apply!
