This is the philosophy by which many people live today. They want the attention. They want people to notice them. And, especially when they do something good, they want everyone to see it. Jesus talked unfavorably about those who would do “charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them,” those who would pray to “be seen by men” and those who would “appear to men to be fasting” (Matt. 6:1, 5, 16). But, the only reward they will receive is that for which they seek!
God charges His children not to do anything “with eyeservice, as men-pleasers” (Col. 3:22). We must not act differently depending on those who may be near us or watching us. Our behavior must not change when no one is watching. For, there never is a time when no one is watching! “…Obey in all things…in sincerity of heart, fearing God. And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ” (Col. 3:22-24). We don’t have to wait for God’s attention to come our way! “The eyes of the Lord are in every place” (Prov. 15:3)!
