Let's Go Back to the Bible

He first loved us!

There are some things that you know in your head, but even after knowing certain things for a lifetime, it can still boggle the mind and surpass complete understanding.

The love of God is one of those things that we can “know” but never fully comprehend. Consider parts of 1 John 4. “God is love…the love of God was manifested…He loved us…God so loved us…we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love…He first loved us” (4:8, 9, 10, 11, 16, 19). What did the love of God do for us? “God has sent His only begotten Son into the world…He sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins…the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world” (4:9, 10, 14).

Why is all of this being emphasized in this chapter? So that we, by looking at the mindboggling love of God, we also will “love one another…love one another…love one another…love the children of God…love God and keep His commandments” (4:7, 11, 12, 20, 21; 5:2, 3). May His love motivate us deeply to love Him and each other as He first loved us!
