Let's Go Back to the Bible

When “something” can be “nothing”

Some folks look around at the denominational world today (and often at specific groups) and exclaim, “Wow! It is really something all the ways in which they are doing good and glorifying God.” Let me ask you a question–how do we know that it is “something”?

Jesus placed a great emphasis on “abiding in Him,” especially in John 15. He affirmed that he who does not abide in Him “cannot bear fruit” and actually “can do nothing” (15:4-5). Jesus then explained that to abide in Him is to have His words abiding in you (15:7). John would later write, “He who keeps His commandments abides in Him” (1 John 3:24). Putting this together, if someone does not keep the commandments of Christ, then He is not abiding in Christ and consequently “can do nothing.” At least, he “can do nothing” that would be acceptable to Him.

Only those who abide in the doctrine of Christ have God’s approval (2 John 1:9). Only those who do the Father’s will can enter heaven (Matt. 7:21). There may be someone who is doing “something,” but if they are not abiding in Him and His word, He says it is “nothing.”
