Let's Go Back to the Bible

Serpents and deadly poison — yes or no?

In the days of the early church, miracles, wonders and signs were done by the apostles (Acts 2:43; 4:30; 5:12) and by those upon whom the apostles laid hands (Acts 6:8; 8:13; Heb. 2:4). These signs included speaking in tongues, casting out demons, healing sicknesses, etc. (cf. 1 Cor. 12:7-11). Scripture clearly teaches that upon the completion of the written revelation of God in the New Testament, these signs would have fulfilled their purpose and would cease (1 Cor. 13:8-13; Eph. 4:11-15). However, some believe that these signs continue even today.

If someone honestly believes the Bible but also believes that these signs continue today, then they are faced with a challenge in Mark 16:17-18. In addition to casting out demons, speaking in tongues and healing the sick, Jesus specifies, “They will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them.”

Is that still happening today (successfully and without exception or failure) or have these signs ceased just as the Bible teaches?
