Let's Go Back to the Bible

“You have not because you ask not!”

You’ve heard of “unanswered prayers,” right? The idea is: (1) “I asked God for this.” (2) “I didn’t get it.” (3) “It’s an unanswered prayer.” Of course, such an approach severely limits God to only see, desire and give us what we want. An answer of “Yes,” then, is the only acceptable response for some, but we must realize that God sometimes answers “No,” or “Not right now,” or “Let me give you something better.” Really, there are no prayers that go unanswered.

While there is no such thing as an “unanswered prayer,” there is such a thing as an “unasked prayer.” James wrote, “You do not have because you do not ask” (Jas. 4:2). Think about that. It begs the question, “Why haven’t you asked?” Jesus said, “Ask, and it will be given to you” (Matt. 7:7). John declared, “This is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him” (1 John 5:14-15). Have you asked? In the right way? With the right motives? If not, don’t be surprised that you do not have!
