Let's Go Back to the Bible

“Wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil”

Paul’s desire for the church in Rome was his desire for the church everywhere. His desire for the church should be our desire for the church. It should be our desire for the younger people and the older people of the church. It should be our desire for our homes, for our children, for our grandchildren, for our entire family.

The church in Rome had done well in obeying the gospel, and now they needed to continue their progress. “I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil” (Rom. 16:19). He had earlier said, “Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good” (12:9). He had elsewhere written, “Hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil” (1 Thess. 5:21-22).

When it comes to goodness, we need to learn it, study it, emulate it and hold on to it. But, when it comes to evil, we need to not only abhor it and abstain from it, we need to keep ourselves free from it, unacquainted with it, unmixed with it, uninterested in it! Is this your desire, too?
