Let's Go Back to the Bible

Love means that I’m to do what?

The New Testament of Jesus Christ teaches us through inspired commands that God’s children are to “love” our fellowman (Matt. 22:39), “love” our “enemies” (Matt. 5:44), “love one another” in the church (John 13:34), “love” “all (not just some of) the saints” (Eph. 1:15), and “love” our spouse (Eph. 5:25; Tit. 2:4). In other words, we are to exhibit love for all people on the earth!

In the midst of a detailed description of how that “love” is to be possessed and expressed, God’s Word challenges us to know, accept and put in practice the love that “believes all things” (1 Cor. 13:7). Think about that for a moment. This does not mean to be blind, naïve or a doormat. But, God (God!) tells us to trust someone until there is verified evidence to think otherwise. We are to give our fellowman the benefit-of-the-doubt, and work in our minds to place people’s words and actions in the best connotation possible. Agape love works at being (and wants to be) gracious and not suspicious. Yes, love “believes all things”! Do you?
