Let's Go Back to the Bible

Let the Bible define “love” for God

Do you love God? I hope that you do! What greater affirmation could be made? But, do you love God as God Himself defines what that love is?

God has promised that He “preserves all who love Him” (Psa. 145:20), “that all things work together for good to those who love God” (Rom. 8:28), and “the Lord has promised” “the crown of life…to those who love Him” (Jas. 1:12). But, do I love Him as He expects me to love Him?

Repeatedly in the Old Testament, it is established that God extends His mercy to “those who love Him and keep His commandments” (Deut. 7:9; 5:10; Ex. 20:6; Dan. 9:4). What did the Lord “require”? “To walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord” (Deut. 10:12). The same truth is affirmed over and over in the New Testament. “This is the love of God, that we keep His commandments” (1 John 5:2-3; cf. 2:4-5). “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15, 24). Now that God has defined it, do I truly love Him?
