Let's Go Back to the Bible

He would have been 99 years old today

As with most professions, preachers are often asked, “What made you want to become a preacher?” To that question, I usually answer, “My grandfather,” which leads to a series of other questions. “Was he a preacher, too?” No. “Was he an elder?” No. “A deacon?” No. “Did he teach Bible classes or take a lead in worship services?” No, never. Totally perplexed, the next question is usually, “Well, then, what did he do to make you want to be a preacher?”

Pay attention to how I usually answer that last question. How could this man have been the greatest influence in a young man wanting to become a preacher? Answer: He was a genuine Christian man! He loved his wife, but he loved God more! His family was a high priority, but the Lord and His church were his first priority! He spent a lot of time teaching me to play Solitaire, but he spent most of his time reading the Bible! Jesus Christ was OBVIOUSLY grandpa’s life, and if being a Christian was that real and that important to grandpa, I wanted to be like him!

How can you have untold influence on others? Live every day as a genuine Christian!
