Let's Go Back to the Bible

Brotherly love for Jesus

It could be argued (rather successfully) that “love” is the grandest theme of the Bible! Jesus loved us SO much that He gave “Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God” (Eph. 5:2). That is love (1 John 3:16). In return, the Lord expects us to love Him! Do you love Jesus?

The Greek language had multiple words for “love.” The highest form of love is “agape” love, which is an unconditional, unselfish love, which elevates the needs of another above our own. God had this love for us (John 3:16). We are to have this love for God (Matt. 22:37). The Greeks had another word for love, which was a “brotherly love.” “Phileo” love is a tender, affectionate love, which is tied directly to the emotions. Now, which are we to have for Jesus?

The answer is both. Perhaps we think most often of having “agape” love for Jesus, but Paul said, “If anyone does not love (phileo) the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed” (1 Cor. 16:22). Do you have a tender, affectionate love toward Jesus, as your Brother?
