Let's Go Back to the Bible

Taking offense at everything

Some people just get offended at anything and everything. Have you noticed? They are reminiscent of one of Jesus’ disciples. Perhaps you’ve heard of him. His name was Judas.

During the last week of Jesus’ life, Mary of Bethany came and anointed Jesus’ head and feet with a costly fragrant oil worth a year’s wages. Judas was indignant and scolded Mary for wasting something so valuable, which could have been sold and given to the poor (Mark 14:3-9; John 12:1-8). However, John tells us that it was not that Judas “cared for the poor, but because he was a thief” (12:6). Here was a generous, compassionate woman doing “a good work” for Jesus (Mark 14:6), and, of course, there had to be someone who took offense.

Are you someone who gets offended by the good deeds and good intentions of others? Be careful. So was Judas. Are others sometimes offended at good deeds that you do? Don’t let their negative attitude affect you and stop you from serving the Lord. Keep your focus on Him!
