Let's Go Back to the Bible

“My treasures are laid somewhere beyond the blue”

There is certainly nothing wrong with having earthly treasures, but that is not the same thing as “laying up treasures.” The act of “laying up treasures” is a deliberate and persistent effort to (1) focus one’s life in a particular direction, (2) devote one’s time and effort toward a particular end, and (3) seek the reward that comes from these efforts.

Jesus makes it clear that there are only two options in the arena of “laying up treasures.” One either “lays up treasure for himself” (Luke 12:21) “on earth” (Matt. 6:19) (think about the limited, temporal and self-focused nature of those treasures) OR he is “rich toward God” (Luke 12:21) and lays up “treasures in heaven” (Matt. 6:20) (think about the bountiful, eternal and Jesus-focused nature of those treasures). Where is “your treasure” (Matt. 6:21)? Jesus said that determining the answer to that question will tell you everything about yourself. Are your treasures really laid up in heaven?
