Did anyone ever tell you when you were growing up, “Don’t look at the sun! You’ll go blind!”? It reminds us of Saul of Tarsus seeing “a light from heaven, brighter than the sun” (Acts 26:13), which caused him to be blind for three days (Acts 9:3-9). We grasp the concept of bright lights affecting our ability to see.
So, darkness should be safe for our vision, right? No, not spiritual darkness! The apostle John wrote about one who continually “walks in [spiritual] darkness” (1 John 2:11). He walks there because he loves “darkness rather than light,” because his deeds are “evil” (John 3:19). But, when he walks in darkness, he “does not know where he is going,” and he doesn’t know “because the darkness has blinded his eyes” (1 John 2:11).
We don’t think about darkness blinding our eyes, but it does. And John is writing to Christians. Christian friend, is it possible that the alure of this world has blinded you to your spiritual condition and you do not even know that you are in darkness? Please, turn on the light, see where you are, and make needed changes.
