Let's Go Back to the Bible

Wives, it still says “respect”

These are challenging times for marriages. What is depicted in Hollywood, the media and many relationships today is far from what God designed husbands and wives to be.

So, is this justification for a husband to not fulfill  his God-given roles if “nobody else is,” or for a wife to not fulfill her God-given roles if “nobody else is”? No, not at all! In fact, it is needed now more than ever! Husbands are instructed to love their wives, “just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her” (Eph. 5:25). No husband has the right to say, “Well, my wife is not worthy! The way she treats me–she doesn’t deserve my unconditional, sacrificial love!”

The same can be said for today’s wives, who are instructed to “submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord” and to “respect her husband” (5:22, 33). No wife has the right to say, “Well, my husband is not worthy! The way he treats me–he doesn’t deserve my respect!” Every husband and every wife falls short, but heeding God’s design can improve any marriage!
