Let's Go Back to the Bible

What difference does it make to know he was married?

Faithful Christians are responsible for standing for truth (Eph. 6:10-14) and giving an answer to questions that are asked (1 Pet. 3:15). It is truly amazing how God supplied the answers in His Word (cf. 2 Pet. 1:3; 2 Tim. 3:16-17), even before many of the answers were ever needed.

Consider this. Which of the apostles was married? Was James? John? Matthew? Andrew? Paul said that “the other apostles” were married (1 Cor. 9:5), but we do not know which ones or if all of them were. And, if they were, what difference would that actually make to us? But, the Lord specifically chose to teach us that the apostle Peter was married! He had “a believing wife” (1 Cor. 9:5), and therefore, a mother-in-law (Matt. 8:14). In order to be qualified to serve as an “elder” in the church (1 Pet. 5:1), he had to be “the husband of one wife” (1 Tim. 3:2).

Hundreds of years before a group ever falsely claimed that Peter was the first Pope, and even bold enough to claim he wasn’t married at that time, God gave us the answer. May we be true to the inspired Word and not human traditions!
