Let's Go Back to the Bible

Were there any Bereans at church on Sunday?

On his second missionary journey, Paul visited the cities of Thessalonica and Berea. Luke drew a sharp contrast between the receptivity of the gospel made by certain individuals in each of these cities, when he noted that those in “Berea…were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica” (Acts 17:10-11). What was it that set the Bereans apart? Let me ask this–when you went to church on Sunday, how did you listen to the preacher? Like a Berean?

Did you receive the word that he preached? I suspect that you did. Did you receive it with great eagerness? In all likelihood you did. BUT, were you really like the Bereans? They “searched (i.e., continually examining) the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things [preached by Paul] were so.” They wanted to make sure what they heard was really God’s truth!

Did your preacher preach God’s Word or man’s word? God’s doctrines or man’s doctrines? God’s traditions or man’s traditions? God’s plan or man’s plan? It makes a difference!
