Let's Go Back to the Bible

Two every minute

How long will it take you to read this article? Probably less than a minute. If it takes you about a minute, then within the time that you’re reading this article there will be (on average) two divorces in the United States. Someone might say, “Well, that doesn’t sound too bad.” In an hour, there will be about 115. In a day, about 2,750. (Almost as many baptized on Pentecost.) This year there will around 1,000,000 divorces in this country. Now, how does that sound?

Some statisticians have boasted recently that the divorce rate is dropping. If that’s true, it’s probably due to fewer people actually getting married. (The marriage rate is the lowest it’s been in 150 years.) But two million people will get a divorce just this year. Is that acceptable?

Divorce has probably touched all of our lives in some way. However, does that make it right? The Bible still says that God “hates divorce” (Mal. 2:16), and “what God has joined together, let not man separate” (Matt. 19:6). Let’s do all we can to stand where God stands!
