Let's Go Back to the Bible

The finger of God

During the ministry of Jesus on this earth, demons–who were under the sway of Satan, “the ruler of the demons” (Luke 11:15)–were permitted, by God, a certain (but limited) exercise over individuals. The purpose of allowing demon-possession seemed to be to prove Jesus’ power and authority over all things, including the spirit realm (cf. Matt. 12:28; Mark 1:27). Demon-possession ceased when the age of miracles ceased (Zech. 13:2; 1 Cor. 13:8-12).

But the focus of this article is on one expression of Jesus about His Divine power over evil. The Son of God said, “But if I cast out demons with the finger of God…” (Luke 11:20). Think about that. How much power does God have over the devil, over evil, over the power of darkness? So much power that with the “flick of His finger,” He can dismiss them.

What’s the point for us? Our God has the power, just in His finger, to thrust Satan aside from troubling us! Have you asked Him to do that lately? “Deliver me from the evil one!”
