Set your heart to attain great wisdom, but remember…

There is absolutely nothing wrong, as you might expect, with increasing in knowledge and wisdom.  In fact, Bible readers are urged, “Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding” (Prov. 4:7).  However, an imbalance with this as a priority in life can be devastating.  Look at Solomon’s inspired reflection on this matter.

“I set my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven…I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind” (Ecc. 1:13-14).  Solomon had sought it all and had seen it all, but in the end, there was no lasting, eternal satisfaction.  “I have attained greatness, and have gained more wisdom than all who were before me in Jerusalem.  My heart has understood great wisdom and knowledge…I perceived that this also is grasping for the wind” (1:16-18).

Wisdom is great to have, but not at the expense of your soul and its eternity with God!
