Let's Go Back to the Bible

“Nothing But the Blood”

A favorite hymn begins by asking this question, “What can wash away my sins?” What a tremendous question! There is nothing that could be more critical! Every accountable creature desperately needs the answer to that question!

So, what does wash away my sin? Feeling guilt for my actions will not wash away my sin. Doing a host of good deeds will not wash away my sin. Having the best of intentions while doing those good deeds will not wash away my sin. Praying a bunch of “Hail Mary’s” and “Our Father’s” will not wash away my sin. There is only one thing that will wash away our sins!

Mr. Robert Lowry, the hymn writer, took his answer to that question directly from Scripture. “Jesus Christ… loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood” (Rev. 1:5). When one is baptized, the blood of Jesus washes away sins (Acts 22:16). When a Christian confesses to God and asks for forgiveness, the blood of Jesus washes away sins (1 John 1:7-9). Oh, precious is the flow!
