Let's Go Back to the Bible

“I want you to know–I’m doing you a favor!”

Has someone ever asked you to do something that you really didn’t want to do, or they asked you to help when it really wasn’t convenient? When you went ahead and helped anyway, did you let them know (even if just in a subtle way) that you were doing them a favor and messing up your  schedule to assist them, so that they would know how inconvenienced you were?

Do you suppose that is the reaction that Jesus would have had or that He expects us to have? In Matthew 5:41, Jesus instructed His disciples, “And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.” Should we “complain” about it? “Do all things without complaining” (Phil. 2:14). Should we seek to draw attention to our good deed? “When you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you” (Matt. 6:2). Why does everything have to be about us?

Our endeavors in this life (even when inconvenienced) are not about us, but about others (Gal. 6:10) and about Christ (Col. 3:23). Can others see Jesus and His humility in you?
