Let's Go Back to the Bible

How reasonable are you?

Most of us are likely familiar with Paul’s challenge in Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always.” And, most of us are probably very familiar with Paul’s challenge in Philippians 4:6, “Be anxious for nothing.” Both of those can be quite challenging to live, and yet even more rewarding! But, how familiar are we with the challenge sandwiched between those two?

The old King James Version says in Philippians  4:5, “Let your moderation be known unto all men.” What does that mean to you? The NKJV has, “Let your gentleness be known to all men.” The ASV says, “Let your forbearance be known unto all men.” The NASB has, “Let your gentle spirit be known to all men.” The ESV translates, “Let your reasonableness be known to everyone.” The emphasis of this word is on a humble influence that foregoes one’s personal rights for the good of others. Added to that challenge is to let this be known to everyone!

So, would others describe you as gentle, reasonable or forbearing? Quite a challenge!
