Got any ability? How much?

The English word “ability” is found in four New Testament passages in the New King James Version.  (Interestingly, there are three different Greek words used for that one English word.)  In each of these passages, there is always a degree or measurement of the “ability” that is key to the context.  Think about these things in relationship to your ability and what you do with it.

The Lord blesses us individually, “each according to his own ability” (Matt. 25:15).

“The ability which God supplies” is to be used to minister and serve others (1 Pet. 4:11).

Early Christians set an example of giving “each according to his ability” (Acts 11:29; 2 Cor. 8:3).

Some early Christians freely gave for others “beyond their ability” (2 Cor. 8:3).

As our abilities have been given to us by God, they actually belong to God (cf. 1 Cor. 6:19-20).  While He intends for us to use what He gives us for our own good and the good of others, most importantly we have them, “that in all things God may be glorified” (1 Pet. 4:11).
