Let's Go Back to the Bible

Did Jesus Say, “Amen”?

The question, “Did Jesus say, ‘Amen,’” is rather interesting. We know that He concluded the Lord’s prayer with “Amen,” but is that the only time He ever used the word? We use the word often and it is such an encouragement to preachers when that response comes from the audience—I really miss Ephriam Davis! Did Jesus say, “Amen,” at other times?

It might surprise you to know that the Scripture records that our Savior used the word 102 times. This is twice the number of times the word is found in the rest of the New Testament. It is also found 30 times in the Old Testament. The reason we may not be aware of this fact is the Greek word for “Amen” is usually translated by the word “verily.”

Just think of how often Jesus used the word twice in a sentence. He said, “Verily, verily, I say to you . . .” In the Greek He said, “Amen, amen, I say to you.” The next time you read these words (he used them in 25 sentences), think about His actual words. It’s OK to say amen!
