Let's Go Back to the Bible

An unexpected house guest

As Christians, we are charged to be “zealous for” and “maintain good works” (Tit. 2:14, 3:8). We are to ensure that the words that proceed from our mouths are “good for edification” (Eph. 4:29). We are to ensure that the actions that proceed from our hands “do good to all” and even “do good to those who hate” us (Gal. 6:10; Luke 6:27).

Regrettably, in the face of our attempts to “have regard for good things in the sight of all men” (Rom. 12:17), often the world repays evil for good. We are mocked, insulted, ridiculed, laughed at, ostracized, scorned, targeted, falsely accused, criminally charged, arrested, imprisoned, etc. All because we seek to stand for truth, righteousness, goodness and agape love.

Brethren, let us resist the temptation to repay evil for evil. Let us not be overcome by evil. Let us keep in mind this stirring proverb, “He who returns evil for good, evil will not depart from his house” (Prov. 17:13). Let someone else deal with that house guest and not us!
